Shadowing
Shadowing is also an awesome privilege and opportunity for you to make new contacts and see the day to day activities of someone who does what you may want to do. It will allow you to see on a first hand basis what you like and dislike about the job, the people that do it, the procedures followed, and how it may affect you over the course of your career. Another very important plus to this is that you will get to know the person you shadow hopefully as this is one of the goals so as to gain an in depth knowledge of the career; as you do so you will hopefully make a bond with the person that will enable them to write an outstanding, glowing letter about you that will make that committee say this kid should be in our school, he/she would make a great doctor!
Research and Getting Published
Doing research is an outstanding opportunity to broaden your knowledge base, expereince, get to know some of your professors which is important for those all important letters of recomendation, and of course it gives you the opportunity to possibly get your name on a scholarly article! Both doing research and getting published as it were are an outstanding boost for your application, especially as not so many students get the opportunity to do so or do not want to do it. Though as some of you might guess, a large portion of those that do in fact do some research may never get their name on a scholarly article before they apply to medical or dental or vet school; all is not lost. It is still most definately worth your time and effort to do research. Some students actually use this avenue to get to know multiple professors by not sticking to only one research project or one professor during the time they do research.
